Can never go back to 110° ever again

There can be some little things I could whine about with this HMD, but they knocked it out of the park with the FOV that makes me really not care. It became essential for the VR experience to not feel like you are looking through binoculars. In my experience the FOV is not really a full 200° (rendered maybe but not optically), but more like 170°. Still, this is pretty amazing. Not advertised the vertical FOV is impressive too. The icing on the cake is a nearly imperceivable SDE.

My 2070 Super doesn't care to run above 120Hz, so I can't say much about the higher refresh rates. At 120Hz Pimax's Oculus ASW-like brainwarp processing works great, and at 120Hz it happens so fast it's not that noticeable when frames drop.

The strap uses the ratcheting knob style and is the best design for VR headsets (hard hats have been doing it for decades, my guess because it works). This strap is also gracious with foam padding. It's a bulky HMD, but the strap does the job comfortably. An issue I have is tilting my head 90° or more sideways, as the foam is great on the back and front, but not really there on the sides.

Blacks can be a little grey, but when playing I don't really notice. It does make the brightest whites seem low contrast in comparison. The nice thing is there is no ghosting, which OLED panels have a problem with. The lack of noticeable SDE makes up for the low contrast by making everything look smooth and continuous.

The software is good, mostly. It has a lot of video customization options, and the defaults are good enough already I'd probably do worse messing with them. Translation from Chinese to English sometimes gets in the way.

I like the foveated rendering for the benefit of performance, but it will have some occasional graphics glitches. Some people will find the shimmer FFR causes at the periphery distracting, but it didn't bother me. It's hard for me to look that far and the lenses get a little fuzzy at that extreme angle anyway. It's more important that it isn't just black.

Some other little issues are just glitches that could be Pimax, SteamVR, or both, that means sometimes I have to reset my PC. The base station power suspend feature also doesn't seem to be compatible.

My only real bummer is the over-ear speakers are really weak and hollow sounding.

I also would like to mention that my customer support experience has been responsive. I say that just because Reddit likes to moan, and maybe it has been awful for some, but not here. Shipping was slow, two weeks for the HMD, and nearly a month for the base stations and index controllers. Not the longest shipping I've experienced from Shanghai however.

I really can't state enough how important this FOV is. I'm curious to see the 8k in action at a high frame rate, because after seeing how important FOV and frame rate are to VR, the only thing left is crispness.

Would've Been Great

I ordered this headset thinking that it would be a wonderful step up from my original HTC vive and boy it was when i finally got it working to play for that first time the high refresh rate was really nice, but this is only after i use the software to reboot the hmd over 10 times just to get a clear picture in the lenses. every time i start up this headset there seems to be a problem with the lenses whether the colors are inverted on one or both of them or they just don't turn on. I have been talking with support for the past 5 days now but they have been almost no help, i live in the US and have EST and the only time ew support ever gets back to me is about 4 am and half of the time they wont even respond. I'm getting very pissed all i am trying to do now is get a replacement for my current headset that I am assuming was sent to me broken, but i wouldn't know that because the "Great Support" that they claim about wont tell me what to do or really help I just keep getting delayed. Other then all the issues I'm going thru this would be a great hmd, i know that people have complained about the colors being washed out and they aren't wrong about that they are defiantly not as bright as some other headsets i have used but they aren't bad and to be honest I like the color that the lenses give, its not the brightest and not the most colorful but with other hmd's I've had the problem of my eyes being really strained and this kind of helps. Im still going to try and talk to this awful support and get a replacement and I'm hoping that if i do it will be a lot better then the one with all the problems i have now but if not I can defiantly say I'm going to switch and wait the almost 8-9 weeks for an index hmd.

This is probably a great device for certain applications but it doesn’t work very well for x-plane which is what I need it for.

Great high fov 180 Hz VR headset

In October of 2020 I discovered pimax on reddit and after informing myself about their headsets and the many complaints about the sde, colors, sharpness and shipping times which I think they have fixed as I got my 5k super in just 14 days after ordering in early December, when I was making an order I was expecting it to come after a couple of months but came pretty fast to eu, it came with no issues and after some setting changing I was ready to go, sde is do able and is only on the edges of the lenses and mostly on the bot and top not a deal breaker as you get used to it and forget about it, the headsets and very immersive that you sometimes forget that you're in vr (tested only in iracing, I will have to get the controllers and base stations to play something else) it's sharp with the right settings so you will see more around you and further into the distance, some headsets might have sharper image and are cheaper but you lose the fov and hz which to me are very important after trying it and I won't go back to low fov Hz vr headsets. The audio is meh, it's like playing music on your phone speaker instead of headphones as they're not on ear the standard audio strap. The colors are a bit lacking but it's do able. If it's blurry in the middle of the lenses after you touch them with your hair, clean it with a cloth and it should go away and find a good sweet spot

What I would like to be upgraded in the next pimax vr headset (8k super) :

Deluxe audio head strap instead of standard
Improved colors
Improved sde
Improved sharpness
Longer cable
Higher Hz on large FoV
Higher FoV of 200 from 170
Maybe some auto optimization feature in pitool to make the headsets more ready out of the box.

4 out of 5
5 out of 5 will go to the upgraded version that I wanna see next which will be hard to do and might come out after 1-3 years(8k super)
5k super should satisfy you until then.

Amazing VR headset, even better as 2020 buy.

So buying this headset, ive been constantly bombarded by the bad reputation of the company, however I still went and bought the product and I have good and bad things to say about it. First off visuals, they are stunning. Combined with 180hz and high FOV and the fact that SDR isn't noticeable (for me) I love the visuals of this headset and I couldn't have asked for more. I will say though using the 180hz mode isn't really worth it enough to buy it over the index, but the FOV for me at least definitely is a game changer. Its extremely smooth and and everything just works out of the box and almost natively with valve index base stations and controllers. A complaint I have is the fact that the FOV's listed at the bottom of the store page don't actually correlate with the refresh rates, so you can only use high FOV with 90hz mode for some reason. Maybe its just that haven't updated the software yet or its actually designed this way. From 120hz and above it only allows you to use small and normal FOV which is a bummer as its not what is advertised, but that's minor and I have a feeling that its just a software issue and isn't unlocked yet. Most of my complaints come from the audio strap's audio quality. I've gotta say its better than I expected, but simply isn't loud enough for either the mic or headphone audio even maxed out and I think I will just go ahead and buy the DAS to replace the MAS. Atleast with the MAS comfort is good. That's pretty much all I have to say about it and for a headset released in 2020 I'm glad I bought this over the index.
